REFLECTING . . .

On Words by Martin Luther King, Jr.

Occasionally in life there are those moments of unutterable fulfillment which cannot be completely explained by those symbols called words. Their meanings can only be articulated by the inaudible language of the heart.

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically…Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.

Whatever your life’s work is, do it well. A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better.

That old law about ‘an eye for an eye’ leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.

Cowardice asks the question, ‘Is it safe?’ Expediency asks the question, ‘Is it politic? But conscience asks the question, ‘Is it right?’ And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but because conscience tells one it is right.

The question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be . . . The nation and the world are in dire need of creative extremists.
